DISCOVER THE REGION

Payzac is a pretty village of 1001 inhabitants at 1h north-east of Périgueux.

On the square of Payzac stands proudly its brand new hall with its church and bell tower from the 16th century. 

You can sit on the terrace of the bistro, enjoy a glass of Bergerac while watching Payzacois and Payzacoises pass by.

The Périgord Vert offers a multitude of castles and caves to visit. For the more adventurous, you can discover the activities of the Nautical Centre of Rouffiac 4 km away, or take the hiking trails on foot or by bicycle.

Historically, Payzac is one of the oldest parishes in the Limousin: its church was attested in the year 780 and the current one, Historic Monument, presents a Romanesque base of the year 1200.

Built on three hillsides at an altitude of 400 metres, the town is surrounded by the Auvézère, which over the centuries gave it a rich range of activities. Mills, forges and spinning mills followed one after another in the course of its tributaries, such as the Belles Dames stream, where the Papeterie de Vaux, now a museum, developed in the 19th century.

 

In the previous century, at the time of the Revolution, Payzac left the fledgling Corrèze in 1793 to join the new department of the Dordogne, with the status of chief place of canton. This status did not last, but Payzac retained its demographic and economic impact. With a good part of its territory of 5000 hectares, the agricultural world prevailed thanks to the excellence of its Limousine cattle and orchards.
